How to determine if your symptoms are caused by a food intolerance

Food intolerance occurs when a person has difficulty digesting a particular food or group of foods. This can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain and even headaches. Here are some ways to determine if you have food intolerance:

Keep a food diary: Write down what you eat and any symptoms you experience afterward. This can help you identify patterns between the foods you eat and your symptoms.

Elimination diet: Eliminate suspected foods from your diet for a period of time (2-4 weeks) and then reintroduce them one at a time while monitoring your symptoms.  Many foods, especially packaged foods, have ingredients, including allergens, that may contribute to your symptoms. Allthough you may not have a particular food allergy, these allergens may contribute to your intolerance.

Blood test: A blood test can measure the levels of antibodies to certain foods in your bloodstream, which may indicate an intolerance.

Hydrogen breath test: This test measures the amount of hydrogen in your breath after you consume a specific food. It’s used to help diagnose common digestive problems, including SIBO, IBS and lactose intolerance. High levels of hydrogen can indicate an intolerance.

Stool analysis: Stool samples can be analyzed for undigested food particles, which may indicate an intolerance.

There are more and more foods avaialbe that have cleaner and allergen-free ingredients. Reading food labels and selecting those that offer preferred ingredients can help in reducing food intolerance symptoms.

It's important to note that food intolerances are different from food allergies, which can be life-threatening. If you suspect you have a food allergy, it's important to see a doctor for testing and diagnosis.
